Cigar Cutters - Guillotine, Punch, V Cut - Pros and Cons

Now, we all know cutters come in many different shapes and sizes ready to meet our every need. But should you opt for a guillotine, punch cut or V cut? Let’s have a look at some of the pros and cons when it comes to using each type of cutter

1) Guillotine

Available in either a single or double blade, this cutter is designed to make a straight cut across the head of the cigar. They are a good choice for beginners as are easy to use, portable and you can get them for a good price. There is also a wide variety of this type of cutter to choose from. They make a wide opening on the cigar, making it easier to draw from. On the negative side, the blades can dull a little faster than others, and you have to make sure you cut above the cap to ensure you don't unravel your cigar.

If this sounds to your taste, why not try the classy Rosewood Guillotine Cigar Cutter. Well made with razor sharp cutting skills as well as an attractive appearance, the Rosewood would make a welcome addition to any collection. The blades are stainless steel, and is has a rubber grip handle for ease. A classic and stylish design.

2) Punch Cut

Punch cutters are great because they are easily transportable, and most can be attached to a keychain, meaning you're never going to be stuck gnawing off the end of your cigar. They again are a popular choice for beginners, and good for using with mixed filler cigars. As the punch cutter makes a smaller opening in the cigar, the draw is more flavorful and you are unlikely to get tobacco in your mouth. On the negative side, these cutters cannot be used with Figurados, and if you want a larger hole for an easier draw, you will need to punch twice.

3) V Cut

The V Cut is an acquired taste, but those who opt for it are very passionate about its positives. Sometimes seen as a mix between the guillotine and the punch, it gives a cleft shape notch to the cap. It provides a good amount of surface area without exposing your mouth to rogue tobacco, channeling the smoke, making for a rich and easy draw. There isn’t as large a selection of this type, and they can be very difficult to sharpen, but don’t let that put you off.

The Colibri V-Cut Cigar Cutter is a top-notch example, which boasts a modern design. You can opt for either black, blue or red accents on the strong metal anodized construction.  It is spring loaded, is lightweight, and makes a razor sharp cut every time.
