March Madness: Catch the Fever
When the Super bowl ends most sports fans turn their attention to NCAA basketball. I know all of you will be filling out a bracket or two and looking for the “Cinderella” that blows up all of your friends’ brackets. Fear not my fellow sports junkies, I am here to help you steer your brackets to success. I won’t be ready to give you my Final Four until I see the bracket unveiled, but I am going to start giving you some teams to be on the lookout for. You are going to hear the term RPI (Rating Percentage Index) a lot during the selection show. The RPI is a formula used to rank teams based on its wins and losses and the strengths of its schedule. The selection committee uses this formula to help determine which teams get into the tournament and which teams don’t. I personally love the RPI when filling out my bracket because it gives me a good indication of some mid major teams that could win a game or two. Now I’m not giving away all my secrets, but here are a couple of teams I think you need to start paying attention to. I am going to start with big schools and then give you some mid majors that I am starting to watch, and see if they pass the “AJ’s eye test.”
Big schools to watch
You have to start with your traditional powers which are Duke, Kansas, Louisville, Syracuse, Michigan St, Florida and Louisville. There are some traditional powers that are down this year that you may want to stay away from like Kentucky, North Carolina, and Maryland. There are some teams that are coming back from the dead like Michigan, Indiana, Arizona and NC State. Then you have Miami that has never been good in basketball but they are beating the crap out of everyone and there RPI right now is number 2 in the country (Those of you new to the blog, I am huge Miami Hurricanes fan – so you know it is all about the U with me).
The Mid Majors I like so far
You have to start with the tournament tested teams like Gonzaga, and Butler, and UNLV. I also really like Belmont and San Diego St. With that said I think New Mexico will be the cream of the crop when it comes to the Mid Majors this year; they may even have a sweet sixteen run in them.
I am working with the Marketing Department and all I am allowed to say at this point is that the Final Four contest will have a very cool prize….. AGAIN STAY TUNED!!!!AJ’s Smokin’ Sports Corner: NCAA Basketball Tournament Preview by David Sabot
