Does your NCAA tournament bracket make you feel like these comics? Don’t worry, there are millions of you out there this week. This is another classic story of how unpredictable the tournament is every year and this week I’m going to do a 2014 NCAA Tournament Recap. Of course we at Cheaphumidors had a big office pool, where everyone filled out a bracket. (Except for Dave, he did not want us to all laugh at him for picking Wofford college to win the whole thing.)
As you guys know, I am a huge sports fan, but I particularly love college basketball. I watch at least 2 or 3 games a week during the season, so I feel fairly confident that I can speak intelligently about most teams out there.
I almost had to make her fill out a bracket and pay for her entry fee just to get her to fill one out. She told me she based her picks solely on if she ever heard of the school. If she did not know the school then she just made a random guess. Milwaukee University was in her the final four, so it’s obvious how random her picks really were! However, I am only two points ahead of her coming out of round 3. Anyone else have that same kind of story in their office pools? I understand your pain and embarrassment.
Well at least I can say that 3 out of my 4 Final Four teams are still alive including my champion Michigan State. I did call the North Dakota, and Davidson upsets, but Mercer over Duke? Really? If anyone would have picked that in any bracket, I would have laughed out loud! I didn’t pick it so I know it doesn’t count, but Harvard beating Cincinnati was not an upset. They beat New Mexico last year in the first round, and if they had not run into Michigan State, they could have won another game. Tommy Amaker is building a solid program at Harvard and they may be good for years to come.
Now I am going to vent a little about my one Final Four team that did not make it, and another school that should have made it – Creighton and Wichita State! You had your chance to show the world that your school could compete with the big boys and both of you could not make it out of the first weekend. That was a pathetic performance!
I ripped two teams apart in my last week’s blog and both teams surprised me with their performance. UCLA and Kentucky played much better than I anticipated. I still do not think either one will make the Final Four – heck they may both lose in the sweet 16 – but for now they are still alive and that is saying something. I take full credit for telling you to stay away from Ohio State. I knew that was not going to be a good team and when I saw they drew Davidson in first game, I smelled an upset from a mile away.
So I guess I have to pick a new winner out of the West Region (thanks again Creighton, I will never pick you again). I still think that Florida will come out of the South, Michigan State will win the East (plus be the overall champion), and Louisville will run the table in the Midwest. I am starting to see a Wisconsin vs. Arizona matchup to see who will be in the Final Four. I would tend to ride with Zona in that matchup only because I think Baylor will be such a tough game for the Badgers. I am not sure if they will have enough left in the tank to beat a fast-paced Wildcat team.
Check out the updated NCAA bracket below.
I want to give you an update on the Man of War humidor contest. It looks like we still have 14 entries that are still alive. Good luck to all of you! I would already be out of this contest if I was allowed to win. Did I mention that I am NEVER picking Creighton again for anything!
We will be running an awesome cigar deal starting this Friday. I will admit that I prefer mild cigars and the cream of the crop is Montecristo. I am a big fan of all of their sticks but I really enjoy the classic Churchill, and we are knocking 10 bucks off of a five pack. So you’ll get 5 great Montecristo Churchills for $39.99, which is only $7.99 a stick! Go to your brick and mortar store because there is no way in hell that you can get a Montecristo classic Churchill for only $7.99 a stick. So stock up and you’ll have some nice cigars to puff on when your team makes the Final Four, or when you win the office pool.
I hope you enjoyed reading my 2014 NCAA Tournament Recap. Here are a couple of my favorite cheerleader shots from the tournament so far. Enjoy!
