One of the last things you will want to happen with your humidor is for it to malfunction. If it does, your aging cigars could certainly be damaged, and that could be detrimental. If you find that your humidor does not seem to be working right, you will need to troubleshoot it as quickly as possible.
Of course, there are different things that could go wrong, but one of the main issues could come in the hygrometer. If that is what is malfunctioning, then you will need to know how to troubleshoot a hygrometer.
Because there are different types of hygrometers, you will need to troubleshoot them in different ways. If you have a digital device, then the process will be different from an analog hygrometer.
Make sure you are familiar with the right process for the type of device that you have. Then, you can troubleshoot it properly and get your humidor working again as quickly as possible.
The main problem that can happen with a hygrometer of either type is that it could lose calibration. You will need to calibrate it so that it can work properly for your humidor.
If you have an analog hygrometer, this is what you need to do:
Take a hand towel and get it saturated with water.
Then, wrap your hygrometer in the soaked towel. Make sure you use distilled water so that your hygrometer will not damage your humidor later.
Allow the towel and hygrometer to sit for half an hour to an hour. The reading should be 100% humidity. If it is not, the device has lost calibration and you need to set it to 100%.
If you have a digital hygrometer for your humidor, you will need to handle the process a little differently
You will need the following items: a plastic bag, a small open container, salt and water.
You will need to mix salt and water to a thick consistency in the small open container.
Then, put both the hygrometer and the container in a sealed plastic bag. After a full day, the hygrometer should give you a reading of 75%. If it does not, it has lost calibration and you just need to readjust it to 75%.
You can make sure your cigar humidor is working properly by knowing how to troubleshoot all of the parts.
By making sure your hygrometer is working properly, you can be sure your cigars are exposed to the proper humidity.
How to Troubleshoot a Hygrometer by David Sabot
bought a humidor and the hygrometer was rolling around inside of it. there seems to be no way to attach the flimsy device together and there seems to be no way to get it fixed into the display window.
