One of the questions we get asked a lot is, “How do I hook up an extra fan to my Cigar Oasis unit?” The advantage to having an extra fan or two connected to your humidifier is that it will help to distribute the humidity more evenly throughout your humidor.
When you get your Cigar Oasis unit, you’ll have a control top that comes with a power cord, a little adapter and a ribbon cable. You’ll want to plug the ribbon cable into the adapter and plug the adapter into the wall unit. Typically, what you would do at this point, is plug in the ribbon cable into one of the ports on the unit. There is a port on the side and there is a port on the back. Both ports are inputs – that is to say, you put power into these and power does not come out of them. There are two ports available for use depending on if you’re going to put your Cigar Oasis flat or on its side inside your humidor. If you were to simply plug the ribbon cable into a port at this point, the Cigar Oasis unit would turn on.
In order to add an extra fan to the Cigar Oasis, you’ll need the Hydra fan kit that comes with a splitter, an extra fan and an extra ribbon cable. The extra ribbon cable has a blue side and a side with metal prongs showing on each end of the cable. The trick is to sandwich the ribbon cable that comes with the Cigar Oasis and the ribbon cable that comes with the Hydra fan kit together and put both ribbon cables into one of the two available power input ports.
The ribbon cable that comes with the Cigar Oasis has a clear plastic piece covering the metal prongs – you’ll need to peel that small piece of plastic off of the cable. Alternatively, if you have an extra Hydra ribbon cable you can simply use that as they do not have anything covering the metal prongs.
When you place the two ribbon cables together, the metal prongs on each cable should be facing outward. You are going to put both cords into one of the two power input ports so that you have two cords coming out of the port. You’ll then hear the Oasis Unit turning on. At this point, you’ll take the other end of the ribbon cable that came with the Hydra kit and put that into the splitter and then plug the fan into the splitter. Now you should see power going to both the Cigar Oasis unit and the extra fan.
This process is a fairly simple one and the most important thing is to make sure that you have the metal prongs facing outward on the two ribbon cables that you put into the power input port.
