So, you want insider tips on picking out a humidor gift, eh? Gotcha covered. We’re kind of experts at this. Not to toot our own horn… Let’s break it down and show you the 5 tiny steps involved in our Holiday Humidor Buying Guide.
1. How many cigars does the person have at any given time?
DOUBLE THAT AMOUNT. What? Sales tactic? Nope. (Aww. You hurt our feelings.)
Here’s some reality for you. Here’s what’s really going to happen if you buy a 25 count box.
That’s ONE BOX/BUNDLE of cigars. So he’s going to go pick up another one because his is full. Then there will be a sampler sale of 20 he’s been dying to try. He’ll buy it, and the next one is full. So he’ll pick up another one, but he’ll feel badly he’s got two, so he’ll get a jar. Because that makes it better, right?
Then Black Friday comes along and his favorite sticks are buy one, get one free and get a free humidor! What? How is that possible? Oh, the big guys pull out all the stops on that day. And…father’s day. They see these opportunities and they throw your guy a bone. It’s their two big holidays, right? They should give their loyal customers gifts.
But now your loyal customer has 4, 25 count humidors. And a jar. AND they’re all over your house. There’s one in every room. There’s one propping up that table leg he’s been meaning to fix.
Then he’s best man at that wedding, and he gets a small cheap one as a gift with his monogram on it. And now they are being stacked on top of each other. Now your home is riddled with these boxes. You’ve lost all countertop space.
Now you are spending your vacation days dusting. And he says YOU have too much clutter and knick-knacks! You’re thinking about putting his ashes in there after you kill him…too far?
If you had just bought ONE big one, you wouldn’t have this problem. You’d have ONE item to dust, one key to lose, one humidifier to keep humidified. (Yeah, see how we didn’t extrapolate on all the work you’d have to do to maintain 5 humidors, keep their humidity accurate and keep buying humidification bags? See, we’re trying to keep it simple.)
2. Always buy bigger than you think you will need.
Not another upsell! Nope, try again. Manufacturer’s OVER rate the capacity of humidors.
When you think about it, it makes sense. Cigars come in every size and shape imaginable. So how can they possibly tell you how many a box will hold…they have no idea what size of cigars you collect! If you owned that company, and someone pressed you to give a number, wouldn’t you go with how many of the tiniest cigars it might hold? Makes the humidor sound pretty big and impressive that way, huh? You’d think they’d have standardized this measurement. Like, how many CHURCHILLS will it hold…but alas, they haven’t. You can liken this industry to the mattress industry, where they only really make 10 different mattresses and then they sell them to 1000 stores with 1000 different labels on them.
3. Glass or Wood top? How do you choose?
Guess what! There’s no functional difference between these two. It’s simple aesthetics. Do you want to look longingly at your collection as you pass by it each time? Or do you want the quality of the wood finish or design speak for itself? It truly is all about looks. Humidors all work the same; none “works” better than another. So go ahead and choose this book by its cover (for once in your life, it’s allowed)! You love black? Great! Flat black or glossy black? Super, we’ve got that. You like handles, great. Silver, brass or gold? Super, we’ve got that too!
This time of year, it’s pretty common to include engraving. Totally not necessary (obviously), but it makes any gift a little more personal. Like you went through the effort of finding out his middle name.
Okay, you’ve got us here. Now we’re just going to upsell. But only because it’s important. We’ll be super honest, we promise. We recommend seasoning kits & calibrating kits. Why? If they don’t get the humidor seasoned, they can’t USE it! (It’s true, you can Google it.) You cannot use an unseasoned humidor!
However, the rest of the upgrades can be added by the gift recipient if they want to upgrade humidifiers and hygrometers, because it comes down to personal preference anyway. And there are about 25 different choices.
