When you think of counterfeit items, your mind probably conjures up images of fake gold coins, fake Rolex watches hawked on the streets of New York City, or faux purses sold from the back of dingy little shop. However, cigars are also one of the luxury items often counterfeited and sold to the unsuspecting. Cuban cigars that you find in the United States are often counterfeit simply because it’s impossible to get them into the country legally. Of course, Cuban cigars certainly aren’t the only ones that are having this problem. Many of the high-end cigar makers now have to worry about someone counterfeiting their cigars.
When people want to have a nice cigar, but they don’t know much about cigars, finding what they believe to be a high quality box of cigars for an unbeatable price of $25 or $50 per box can be tempting. They don’t always use common sense to realize that if someone is offering to sell the cigars at such a steep discount it’s probably going to be a fake. Even those who have been smoking cigars for a number of years can fall to this temptation, believing that they are getting something special and only finding out later that a counterfeiter had fooled them.
If you are trying to determine if the cigars you are considering buying are counterfeits, you have a few telling signs that will be able to help you spot the fakes. The first thing that you will want to consider is the price. Finding someone who is selling cigars that they claim are Cubans at a ridiculously low price should set off the alarm bells in your head. It’s very likely going to be a fake. Keep in mind that high quality cigars are going to be very expensive, many going to more than $200 per box.
The next thing that you will want to look for is the construction of the cigars themselves. The cigars in the box should be the same color. Fake cigars will usually have rough wrappers full of veins as well. Check the packaging as well and look at the bands. Familiarize yourself with the brands that you want, and know the labels.
The best thing you can do before you purchase a box of cigars is to make sure that you are only buying from reputable sellers. Find a great cigar seller in your area, and you can be sure that you are buying only the best quality cigars.Spotting Counterfeit Cigars by David Sabot
