What an awesome problem to have, eh?
You’ve got too many cigars, you fancy cigar-smoker, you! There’s no holding back when you’ve got a craving for a cigar. Nope – you just pop open your humidor and light up. Why conserve when you’ve got enough smoke to last you until the human race is inevitably destroyed by an undetected asteroid?
The answer is this: overflowing humidors may be hurting your cigars.
Humidors are not meant to be stuffed to the gills with cigars. They have a stated capacity, and once you approach or attempt to exceed it, you’re going to run into problems. Temperature issues can creep in, and humidity can go haywire. Too many cigars can dry out your humidifier faster than expected, which could do damage to your whole stock.
Suddenly, a humidifier that used to be good to go so long as you maintained it every couple of months (like your ex) is drying up too fast for you to keep up with (like, ah… your steak… that you left on the grill too long… yeah).
The result is that your cigars are getting ruined. We can’t have that!
It’s simple: grab a humidor that’s bigger than what you expect to need in the near future.
“Oh great, here they go again. NOW the humidor company wants me to buy a humidor that’s BIGGER than what I need! How surprising! Next, the guy who cuts my grass will be selling me turbo-grow fertilizer! Wait a minute – he already does! That bastard! Is there no end to the scams on this lousy planet?!”
Yikes. We’re just trying to help, here. You need room in your dang humidor. There’s no way around overflowing humidors. All you have to do is buffer a little bit for collection growth and to avoid stressing your humidor’s specs. (Keep in mind that humidors are generally benchmarked to coronas.)
Just give me a guideline and leave me in peace.
You got it. If you’ve got 300 cigars and will be actively buying this year, grab a 500-count humidor. You’ll have plenty of space and won’t run into any issues with storage or cigar preservation. Each smoke will always be perfectly aged and preserved. How’s that?
That’s fine. I’m out of here.
