NOTE: Today’s guest blog comes from user “goatcan” over at /r/cigars!
I’ve been smoking for over a year and a half and have noticed that I’ve picked up some cigar smoking quirks. I always have some weird views on cigars some through force of habit and some for no reason at all. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy your smokes, but here are my quirks of herfing:
1. Liga Privada No. 9 should only be smoked in Corona Doble vitola.
I will not smoke it in any other vitola, I do not care how many you give me even if it’s free. One day I walked into a cigar shop and asked the guy working there for a recommendation. “What’s your flavor profile?” he asked. Not knowing what a flavor profile was, I asked him what that meant. He explained that cigars come mild or full body, with little power or lots. I then asked him to give me the strongest, full body cigar in the shop. That’s when I discovered Liga Privada No. 9, that giant Corona Doble is what having a great giant stogie is all about!
2. Always try to nub the cigar. You never know what you might find at the end.
One day I was smoking some My Uzi Weighs A Ton Kentucky Fired Cured. I couldn’t really stand it most of the way smoking through. It’s a cigar quirk to try to smoke everything to ash, but not giving up redeemed the cigar!
3. Always try to one ash the cigar.
Someone once told me that the sign of a good cigar is how well the ash holds on it. Since then I have always tried to one ash my cigars, causing plenty of people to laugh at my quirkiness when I am inevitably brushing myself off a spectacular ash.
4. If it comes in lancero, buy it and try it.
One of my favorite cigar quirks: I love lanceros! There is no such thing as a bad LANCERO! While old people in most B&M’s enjoy the fat cat stogie with a massive ring gauge, I actually find those kinds of cigars one dimensional and boring. I guarantee, damn near every cigar that comes in a lancero is better than its larger ring gauge counterpart.
5. Bring extra cigars for everyone at a herf. Even the guy nobody knows.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a lot of cigars, particularly lots of great cigars. There’s no reason to be a miserly hoarder and keep them all for yourself. Think about when you didn’t have a boss stash, and always bring enough for everyone!
6. Thou shalt smoke thy unicorns.
Some people love hoarding their stash and curating their miniature museum. If it’s a cigar quirk and it’s wrong, I don’t want to be right! Smoke your unicorns because it is far better to smoke it and say you did than to have one on display and say you never smoked it. Smoke ’em if you got ’em!
7. Never undo the band off a cigar.
Many people will take the band off right before they light it up. Some people say it’s bad form to keep your band on your cigar and show off. Here’s my cigar quirk: I will keep the band on and if the band won’t come off peacefully while herfing, I will take some of the wrapper with it when I pull the band off. I have a bag full of bands and none of them are undone.
8. Try to v-cut everything. Yes, even torpedoes.
Since I got my Xikar V-cutter, I refuse to use anything else to cut cigars if I can help it. It’s perfect for slicing off that notch off a lancero, and will cut damn near everything without damaging your cigar cap. Should you use it to cut torpedoes? Probably not, but that’s my cigar quirk, I will use it to cut anything!
9. Pay day is not the best day to buy cigars.
Pay your bills, put your money away for yourself, then use whatever is left to buy cigars. If it means not going out, not drinking, or eating more Spartan, do it!
10. Never herf alone.
Some people love smoking on their own. But I’ll definitely check my Google Hangout or talk to the people working at my B&M. Just like the guy that does not like going to the movie theater by himself, you won’t find me smoking by myself!
And there you have it, folks. These are the cigar smoking quirks that I’ve acquired in my year of smoking. I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s acquired some of these weird habits. Share some of your quirks with us!Cigar Smoking Quirks by Guest Blogger
