2014 NCAA Basketball Champion
For as long as I can remember watching college basketball, I always say that was the craziest NCAA tournament I have ever seen. However, I really do think this year takes the cake! If I had told you that UConn and Kentucky would be playing for a National Championship at the start of the year, nobody would think twice about it. Some would even say that was a solid pick. Both are amazing basketball programs boasting 11 Championships between them, and each has produced countless NBA players.
There is a reason both of them barely made the tournament as at large teams. Neither team had a very good year. Yes UConn beat Florida at home by one point in the regular season but this team also lost to Houston once and SMU twice. Both of those teams did not even make the tournament. They were 12-6 in AAC play. Not the ACC, but rather the AAC. I had to look who was in this conference because I had never heard of it before. Shockingly there was some good teams in the AAC, such as Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis to name a few. However, it’s still not on par with the ACC, Big Ten or even A-10 for that matter. Plus, their RPI ranking was 23.
Now look at the disaster that was Kentucky’s regular season. They started out the preseason ranked #1 in the country in some polls. Everyone talked about the recruiting class coach Calipari got to come to UK this off season. Kentucky was 12 and 6 in a BAD SEC this year. Outside of Florida (who beat them badly twice), the SEC was horrible; possibly the worst basketball conference out there among the power conferences. Their RPI rankings were decent at 16, but they had to make the finals of the SEC championship to boost it that high. Some feel that they needed to get that far to make the NCAA tournament in the first place. So I did bash them in my Final Four preview, but from what do I know about basketball, I had Michigan State winning.
Now the moment you have all been waiting for. As you already know, nobody correctly predicted all Final Four Teams nor did anyone correctly predict UConn to be the Champion. So everyone that correctly entered the contest was put on a piece of paper and we had a drawing. You’ll want to watch the video below to see who won the Man of War Humidor.
