Step by Step Instructions for Cleaning a Lighter

Using a butane lighter is one of the best ways you can light up your next cigar. These types of lighters are great for cigar smokers because they do not cause the flavor of the cigar to become contaminated by impurities. What this means is that when you light the cigar you do not have to worry about the flavor of your cigar being negatively impacted by the impurities in the fuel used in the lighter. It is important that you learn how to clean a lighter so that you can make sure it continues to work well for many years.

One of the first things you need to do when you are cleaning a lighter is to dial down the flame of the lighter. The main reason for doing this is related to your personal safety. It is critical that you use the utmost care whenever you are cleaning a lighter to avoid getting severely burned. Make sure that you set the length of the flame on the smallest flame setting so that if something should cause a flame to spark you will not get burned or burned badly.

For the next step you will need to have a matchstick with you. You will take the wood end of a matchstick, the end that cannot be ignited, turn the light over, and stick it into the butane valve. Once the matchstick has been inserted you will want to press down on the match stick. If you are not sure where the butane valve is on your lighter, it should be located at the bottom, opposite end of the ignition. When you press down you will hear a faint hissing noise as the air inside the lighter is being released from the inside. Do this a couple of times until all of the air is released.

Take a can of compressed air and use it to clean the combustion chamber of the lighter out. You will want to remove all of the dust and other contaminants that might have gotten into this part of the lighter. If too much dirt and debris build up in this part of the lighter, it will clog up and not be able to light.

Once this is completed, you will need to wipe the entire lighter down with a soft cloth. You need to make sure the cloth you use is one that is dry and completely clean. If you should have to refill the lighter during cleaning, this will wipe away any excess butane that might have spilled on to the lighter.
