Why is Cedar Used in Humidors?

All cigar lovers need a good place to store their cigars that will allow them to age and deliver better flavor. If you have been searching for cigar humidors, you’ve probably come across a curious thing. Nearly every make and model that is offered is made out of cedar. The natural question is: why is cedar used in humidors? Keeping your precious cigars at a constant humidity level can help them age beautifully until the flavor is truly at its peak. The type of wood used in the storage case can have a big effect on the overall aging process and results. There are three types of wood that are most often used in these cases.

Spanish cedar is by far the most popular choice. The reason this type of wood is frequently used to line the inside of cases or used for humidor trays is that it is absorbent and helps to stop moisture from building up. This is the most important factor in keeping your cigars fresh and flavorful. Another reason this type of wood is chosen is due to the strong smell. Tobacco worms love to find a tasty cigar to destroy. The strong odor of this wood drives them away. The smell is strong enough to impart a light woody flavor to the stored cigars, a flavor that many people actually enjoy.

American red cedar is another type of wood often used in cases for controlling humidity. It is cheaper to use, which is why it is a good alternative. However, it does not absorb moisture nearly as well as Spanish cedar does. American cedar does keep the tobacco worms at bay, but it has such a strong odor that some cigar aficionados claim that it over-flavors cigars thus ruining the more subtle tones.

Mahogany is the third type of wood you may find used in humidity-battling storage cases. It does a great job of keeping moisture levels down, nearly equal to Spanish cedar. This wood has an extremely mild scent and is preferred by those that do not want a woody flavor imparted to their cigars. The downside of this type of wood is the fact it does not keep tobacco worms away, and any brokenhearted collectors can tell you the damage that tobacco worms can wreak.
