Choosing the right humidor is important; it’s the home for your cigars. While the type and brand of the unit can be frequent questions, there is also the question of size. For instance, many new smokers wonder if it is okay to store only a few cigars in a large humidor. Is it possible for a cigar to have too much room in a spacious humidor? Don’t you fret; here are the answers to that simple question.
There is really no harm in storing only a few cigars in a large unit. In fact, this might actually be a good thing. There are several reasons that you want a larger unit, and these can directly affect your enjoyment.
First, if you store your cigars for a long period in the same space and they are tightly packed, they will begin to transfer flavors between different cigars. You want a unit that is large enough to store your different cigars with some space between them if you plan on aging them for a while.
You also need to consider the future of your hobby.
Most cigar smokers begin smoking on a small scale. Cigars can be pricey and newcomers will usually start off with only a few on hand. However, that will not always be the case. As you become more experienced and more involved in the world of cigars, your collection is going to grow. Therefore, it’s actually highly advised that you buy a larger unit than what you need right at this moment
However, there are some concerns that come with larger units with which you should be familiar before you make any purchase.
Obviously, one concern is going to be price. Larger units are expensive, and none of these are really cheap – not ones that are worth owning, at any rate.
Another consideration is keeping the space properly humidified. Larger spaces require more humidification, and you will need to make sure that you are able to maintain 70% humidity in your unit no matter how many cigars you actually have on hand.
Finally, you need to worry a bit about cleaning and maintenance. Obviously, larger units will require more time on your part to maintain. This can be a significant factor in ownership, particularly if you are not sure that cigar smoking is really for you.
