Hi, my name is Tom Spears and I am the Warehouse Manager and “Master Engraver” here at Cheaphumidors.com. Today we’re going to talk a little bit about the laser engraving process and some of the products that we engrave. We’re getting a little bit away from humidors and doing things like shadow boxes, cutting boards, key chains and any little items like that.
The engraving process itself I find to be really neat! It’s something that I’ve never gotten into before. I could be running the engraving machine anywhere from 6:00 in the morning to 6:00 at night, 6 days a week. It’s that busy, and honestly, it’s that fun to do.
We have two engraving machines: a Mercury and a Spirit. The Mercury is a 15 watt engraver and the Spirit is a 45 watt engraver. The Spirit is a little bit…of course the wattage is a lot higher, 45 compared to 15, so it engraves a little bit deeper. I like it a little bit better on the wood. If we’re doing deep acrylic cutting or anything like that, we use that machine.
What we do is we already have images made up or our customers can send in images that we can have vectorized that are sent over to the computer, and then I have it sent over to the engraver which I want to put it on. Right now, we’re engraving anywhere from 300-400 different items a month. On top of another 300-400 nameplates a month. It’s getting into our busy season, so our machines will be running 24/7 which means I will be too!
The whole process of sending it over to the engraver depends on what kind of item we’re doing and how detailed the image is. It could take anywhere from 1 minute to 5 or 10 minutes. On the engraving itself, depending on how detailed the image is that you want engraved, you could be looking at an extra 3-5 days on shipping time.
The personalization of each product of course depends on the individual that is buying the product. You learn a lot about the people that you never meet doing engravings. It could be anything from a skull and crossbones to something as simple as “Steve’s Cigars,” or anything like that. That’s our laser engraving process at Cheaphumidors.com.
