If you have a good amount of cigar bands lying around the house and you or someone you know likes jewelry, you’ve gotta read on for how to make cigar band jewelry.
Rather than spending money on a generic necklace that can be bought anywhere, create something unique and special with this DIY cigar band project. In addition to our other cigar band projects, we’ve managed to craft up some fine lookin’ jewelry made out of our favorite cigar bands.
We won’t beat around the bush here; this DIY project can be a bit challenging. The most challenging part of this project is the fact that you are working on a much smaller scale than our previous cigar band projects like the humidor or table. However, cigar band jewelry can be done! We’ve got faith in you! Ready for the challenge? Then grab your fancy cigar bands and let’s get this party started!
What You’ll Need
For this project you will need some Mod Podge, an X-Acto knife, clear glass jewelry pendant(s), the accessories to make the pendant into a necklace or earrings (ex. a metal chain and jewelry bail for a necklace or “Ball Hook Earwire” for earrings), strong glue like E6000 or super glue, and your cigar bands of choice.
Create the Cigar Band Pendant
To start, take your cigar band(s) and pendant(s) and figure out how you want it placed on the pendant. Once you have figured out your design, take your Mod Podge and apply a thin layer onto the back of your pendant. Next place your cigar band onto the pendant, design side facing down, so that the design will show through the glass.
If you’d like, you can try to trim the cigar band to match the shape of the pendant. Otherwise, don’t worry about the excess area of the cigar band as you’ll trim it off after it dries.
The beauty of Mod Podge is that it does not dry fast, so if you placed your cigar band off center, feel free to fix it to your liking. Once you have your cigar band in place, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of the band. Then set it aside to dry.
Once your pendant is dry, place your pendant down and use the X-Acto knife to trim the excess cigar band around your pendant. Now your pendant is ready to be transformed into a necklace or pair of earrings.
Attach the Jewelry Bail to the Pendant
You will need a jewelry bail to glue to the back of your pendant. This is the piece that turns your pendant into a necklace. Now if you’re creating a necklace, it’s easiest to buy a premade one rather than creating one yourself with a chain, clasp and jump rings. If you buy a chain necklace from Michael’s or another craft store, all you need to do is open the necklace and string the chain through the jewelry bail and – DONE!
Transform it into a Necklace – or Earrings
If you choose to create the necklace yourself, then it’s a little more complicated. You need to purchase the chain, lobster clasp (for closure) and jump rings from the craft store. Then thread the chain through the bail and attach jump rings to both ends of the chain. Then you can attach your lobster clasp in order to complete your necklace.
If you’re going to create cigar band earrings, you’ll follow these next steps. Once you have applied the jewelry bail, you will want to loop a jump ring through the bail, and then attach the earring wires or “Ball Hook Earwire.”
