The Oliva Serie ‘O’ Maduro is wrapped in an obsidian colored Habano Maduro leaf. The wrapper leaf is smooth, nearly flawless, with only a few small veins. The length of the Robusto is firm, almost overly so, with no palpable soft spots. The cap is thick and beautifully mounted and cuts cleanly with my punch cutter.
Flavor & Draw:
The wrapper leaf gives off a sweet, slightly floral aroma while the foot contributes a strong cocoa scent. The cold draw is incredibly tight but still supplies abundant flavors of crushed black peppercorn, dark chocolate, and toast. Once lit the flavor profile is pretty consistent: intense black pepper, toast, cedar, and a hint of cocoa on the finish.
Burn & Smoking Characteristics:
The draw on the Oliva Serie O Maduro Robusto was incredibly tight and it didn’t produce a whole lot of smoke with each puff. The burn was slow and even but the ash was super flakey and dropped often, usually every ½”- 3/4″ or so. The total smoking time was one hour and 7 minutes.
The Serie O is a great tasting stick. The flavor profile is consistently complex throughout the hour-long smoke. I think this dark Maduro would pair nicely with a sweet white wine. It is a nicely constructed, beautiful stick. However, the tight draw drastically detracted from the overall smoking experience. I would be interested to try the other sizes to see if the draw issue is specific to the Robusto size.
What about you? Have you smoked the Oliva Serie O Maduro and did you have the same draw problems?
