The Ortega Serie ‘D’ Maduro #10 is swaddled in a silky smooth San Andres wrapper. The wrapper leaf is a dark chocolate color with a nice oily sheen to it. The length of the six-inch figurado is firm and expertly rolled and finished with a prim box press. The tapered cap is nicely mounted and cuts cleanly with my Lotus Spectre Cutter.
Flavor & Cold Draw:
The wrapper gives off a pungent aroma of cut alfalfa and wet earth while the foot lends the scent of red berries and cocoa bean. The cold draw is open, giving off strong flavors of cocoa and earth. Once lit, the initial flavor profile is pretty one-dimensional with overwhelming flavors of earth and tobacco. More complex flavors of wood, black pepper, and toasted almonds develop in the second third. The final third contains the same complex flavors with an added hint of dried apricots on the finish.
Burn & Smoking Characteristics:
The Ortega Serie ‘D’ Maduro draws beautifully and produces lots of aromatic smoke. The burn is even and produces a snowy white ash. The strong, compact ash grows to over an inch before the first drop. The burn is a bit hot and quick in the first third but slows and cools considerably by the second third. I was able to smoke it all the way down to the nub without issue. The total smoking time was about 70 minutes.
Conclusion of the Ortega Serie D Maduro
The Ortega Serie D is a delightfully complex stick, full-flavored stick. It would make a great after-dinner smoke and pairs nicely with whiskey.
