Cigar: Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ Selectos Maduro
Ring Gauge: 50
Country Manufactured: Nicaragua
Pre-Light & Construction
This is one of three lines that bear Don Pepin’s name. The cigar is dark-brown and toothy, with a cream colored double-band. The craftsmanship is superb – it has a seamless roll, triple-cap, and solid bunch. Smelling the cigar, you immediately notice a deep, rich earthiness reminiscent of barnyard. The cold draw tastes heavily of cocoa, but it leaves pepper on the lips as well.
Light & Burn
The cap cut cleanly with a Palio, and there was no damage to the head or wrapper. It lit easily as well, producing clouds of creamy white smoke. The burn line began a little wavy, but because it was so solidly constructed, it corrected itself with no touch-ups. The draw was perfect, and each ash held for at least an inch at a time, sometimes closer to two.
Unlike many of Pepin’s blends, there was little black pepper produced by this cigar. It was dominated by rich, dark earthy flavors from the onset. As it burned, notes of cocoa, espresso, and caramel all met the palate. The flavors were wonderfully complex, sometimes fading in and out. Toward the nub, a distinct sweetness on the finish entered the mix, showcasing the wrapper.
This is a cigar that any maduro fan should try. As always, construction was near flawless, and it is complex and full-flavored.Cigar Review: Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ Selectos Maduro by David Sabot
