10. Sour Patch Kids/Sour Punch Straws
Or any other candy dusted with sour – these are probably some of my favorite candies to compliment my sour soul! Although they stand well on their own, they don’t seem to do much to enhance a cigar experience. The sourness momentarily diffuses the tobacco flavor and the sweet fruit finish can still be tasted after the next puff.
Probably one of the most forgotten candies on the list, Smarties are good for completely diffusing tobacco flavor and leaving no aftertaste. Basically this combo is just as exciting as Smarties themselves, but good if you’re looking to neutralize between puffs or for a nonintrusive snack while smoking.
8. Jolly Ranchers
Have you ever thought to yourself that your cigar doesn’t taste enough like a blunt? (You know they’re available at literally any gas station right?) Well worry no more! Jolly Ranchers have got you covered and they come in all your favorite blunt wrap flavors. (Hint: try this with an Undercrown and truly create Swisher Estates!)
Now this was a tricky one. A lot of people out there had good things to say about this combo, but I did not have any good experience with it at first. I smoked a cigar with fancy chocolate bars, Milky Ways, and even mini M&M’s, but they all managed to make me feel sick (you know the feeling that an overindulgence in chocolate provides). While it can bring out the chocolate flavor in a cigar, it sits heavy in your mouth and tends to bring out the tar flavor after a while. After giving this a few tries, I have found the best way to enjoy this is to either have the chocolate directly before or after smoking so you can still enjoy the flavor without having the chocolate sit in your mouth throughout your smoking session.
Does anyone even eat caramel chews anymore? Well YOU SHOULD (at least until they pull out your teeth)! If you’re going to give candy and cigars a shot, this is a very good pairing because it brings out the sweetness, although it’s very awkward to eat and smoke after (especially if you’re still chewing on it). The creaminess can make it like chocolate, in that it can be heavy and make you sick if you stuff your face. And again, beware of the super chewy caramels.
Who knew the rainbow could taste so damn delicious? This combo had a very interesting flavor if you eat right after puffing the cigar and leave a great aftertaste when you go back to it. The real downside to this combination is that your saliva results in a very sticky cigar head and can permanently influence the flavor for the rest of your cigar. How can you not salivate with anticipation when you’re about to eat skittles?
Simply put: mint, yes. Any other kind of gum, no.
Rewind to the 60’s, when these recognizable candy dispensers became popular. They’re basically like Smarties but WAY better, although the aftertaste can be very bitter with certain flavors. Best if served directly from the mouth of your favorite cartoon character.
Ah fall, the best time of year to enjoy bonfires and s’mores that will always leave you with infinitely more leftover marshmallows than anything else! This combination of flavors kinda surprised me. It reminded me of roasted marshmallows at first, but they were also awkward to eat and created an odd but not unpleasant aftertaste.
1. Candy Corn
Not only the most unexpected, but also by far the best combo I’ve had. It doesn’t completely neutralize the tobacco flavor and creates an interesting flavor combination both before and after smoking. It also makes puffs taken directly after extremely smooth.
Ah, research on candy and cigars; it’s tough work but someone’s gotta do it! Now where is my grant money? So now that you’re armed with the knowledge of which candies go best with cigars, it’s time to come up with a game plan on how to confiscate those candies from the kids so you can to pair them with your favorite Cohiba! Unfortunately, since I am allergic, I was not able to try peanut butter candies, so please feel free to share any experiences you have had or try any other candies I might have missed! Still, in my opinion, the best treat to go with your cigar is a nice cold beer or a glass of your favorite liquor (or both). Happy Halloween to all, and to all, many cavities!
